This map first appeared in 1540 in the Geographia but the denomination "Americam" was not added until its inclusion in the Cosmographiae of 1544. The large and decorative ship is Magellan's Victoria, the only vessel of five to survive his voyage; there is also an early named appearance of the Straits of Magellan. Burden 12, state 5.
