TASSILO ADAM (1878-1955)
TASSILO ADAM (1878-1955)
TASSILO ADAM (1878-1955) Album of Photographs. [Jokjakarta: c.1925-1926]. Oblong 2° (400 x 590mm). 382 photographs ranging in size from 235 x 295mm and 85 x 110mm, with photographer's inventory numbers added in manuscript, mounted on 99 brown card leaves with cloth stubs, numbered consecutively in white ink at upper corner. (Without leaf 84, not bound in). Album covers decorated in the style of the Wayang Kulit [shadow puppet] on heavy card, deeply embossed and coloured in gilt, white, red and green with the motif of a stylised Garuda (very slightly rubbed). VERY RARE AND IMPORTANT JAVANESE ALBUM OF PHOTOGRAPHS by the renowned ethnographer Tassilo Adam who was also closely connected to the courts at Jokjakarta and Solo in the 1920s. The majority are of the interior and exterior of the kratons (or Keratons, the Sultan's court) at both Jokjakrata and Soerakarta and were made with the express persmission of the Sultan; the binding duplicates the designs cut from buffalo hide and hand-coloured which are the mainstay of shadow theatre design. As well as being a remarkable record of Javanese theatre and court life, Adams' large scenic photographs are spell-binding. Two photographs in this album were reproduced on pp. 86, 92 of the exhibition catalogue for Toward Independence, a Century of Indonesia Photographed , held at the Ansel Adams Centre, San Francisco 1991, and displayed there. The catalogue also contains an article by Kunang Helmi, Tassilo Adam, the Photographer as Cultural Observer. Reed, pp.87-95. Jane Levy REED. Toward Independence. A Century of Indonesia Photographed. San Francisco: The Friends of Photography, 1991. 4° (300 x 195mm). Plates from photographs. Printed wrappers. Chronicling the photographic careers of Woodbury & Page, Kassian Céphas, Tassilo Adam and others. [TASSILO ADAM]. Wajang Wong. Het Javaansche Tooneel. Een Ethnografische Studie door Tassilo Adam [Onze Aarde Maandschrift, No. 1]. Amsterdam: 1928. 4° (280 x 215mm). Printed wrappers. (3)
