Roosevelt, Theodore (1858-1919). 26th President of the United States. TLS as President, 3pp, approx. 8 x 12 in., Washington, DC. January 20, 1902. First page typed on "Executive Department. / Chickasaw Nation" letterhead, with Chickasaw Nation National Secretary's Office embossed seal at lower left. Here Roosevelt signs in disapproval of a resolution passed by the Chickasaw Nation in November of 1901. The resolution, typewritten on two pages, requests the payment of certain appropriated funds to be made to the Chickasaw Nation for per capita distribution among its people, with signatures of Chickasaw Nation officials including Governor Douglas H. Johnston and National Secretary J. Thompson below. Douglas H. Johnston (1856-1939) served as governor of the Chickasaw Nation for 30 years, fighting hard to better the nation's financial state of affairs. He made changes to the Atoka agreement, emboldening courts to revoke almost 4,000 fraudulent citizenship claims, saving the Chickasaw and Choctaw tribes around 20 million dollars. Perhaps his most daring act as governor was securing permission to sue the federal government for funds illegally obtained from tribal resources. Condition: Document with surface soil, creasing, some discoloration (including top edges of resolution with heavy adhesive residue), and wear including tears, rips, and folds to edges/corners.
