Temperance Advocate, and Seamen's Friend. Vol. I, No. X. Edited by Samuel C. Damon.
Honolulu: Damon, 28 October 1843. 55-62 pages. Quarto (11 x 9 inches; 275x230 mm). Unbound, as issued. Condition: Uneven toning, minor holes at intersecting folds, a few additional creases, light dampstaining, minor edge tears. rare early issue of the hawaiian missionary newspaper with news of the massacres of the crews of the waverly and the harriot at strong's island in polynesia. The Brig Waverly, commanded by Captain Cathcart was commissioned in the Sandwich Islands and sent in 1824 to search for Captain Dowcett and the crew of the missing Victoria. According to the article which appears on page 59, at Strong's Island (i.e., Kosrae) the boat was run ashore by a white man from the island who came aboard to navigate the ship and the captain and most of the crew murdered. Further, it was discovered by the whaling ship The Pacific, that Captain Bunker and the crew of a ship named the Harriot had been murdered at the same island and the ship burned. This issue of the paper also includes news that Hong Kong has been ceded to Great Britain and much information on whaling in the region, including the wreck of the whaling bark Pearl, and the ship names and amount of oil in the port of Lahaina. The Temperance Advocate is better known by its later name, The Friend.
