Ten Circular Reliefs

A set of ten wooden circular reliefs with partially preserved polychromy and gilding. This is probably part of a larger whole with themes of Christ's suffering, the “Passion Cycle”, supplemented by several scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. In the late Middle Ages, emphasis was placed both on Mary’s compassion as well as her martyrdom, which culminates in not only the glorification of Christ in Heaven but also the coronation of Our Lady the Queen of Heaven, as is the case in this cycle. In chronological order: Christ's Prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, The Flagellation of Christ, The Crowning with Thorns, Christ Kneeling Before the Cross, The Crucifixion, The Resurrection of Christ, The Ascension of the Virgin, The Descent of the Holy Spirit, The Assumption of the Virgin, The Coronation of the Virgin Mary.
