Beschreibung:

1p, Sullivan County, Tennessee, 20 Aug. 1811; giving nine-year-old slave George "to have and to hold as their own property absolutely" to his daughter Jenney Peery, wife of Andrew Peery of Montgomery County, Virginia. Signed by Samuel Crockett. (There would be other marriages of the Sullivan family with the Peery family over the generations, especially John Crockett and Mary Polly Peery, m. 1802.) Seal and docketing on verso. This Samuel Crockett is apparently the son of Samuel Crockett (1735-1795) and Jane Steele (1737-1775). The only record we can find of him is a tax listing in Sullivan County, Tennessee in 1796 and 1797, but it does not give family information (spouse, children, etc.). This does NOT appear to be the blacksmith / gunsmith. He was born in 1772 and lived in Williamson County. Both of these Samuel Crocketts are unrelated to David Crockett. There are other contemporary Samuel Crocketts, at least one in Wythe, Virginia, where this branch of the family seems to have originated before migrating to Tennessee. Condition: Light overall toning, folds as expected. Slightly darker toning along folds; "ghost" of seal where folded.
