TENNIEL, Sir John (1820-1914). An album containing sketches for Punch cartoons, [ca. 1851-1870]. 4° (310 x 243mm). 58 original pencil sketches by Tenniel (most ca. 210 x 165mm.) of 54 subjects, 4 double-page, 3 present in two forms: as finished sketches and traced outlines, 1 subject made up from two sketches, all mounted to size. Later brown morocco gilt, covers with triple fillet border, spine in seven compartments with raised bands, lettered in two, the others with repeat floral pattern, gilt turn-ins, g.e. (joints scuffed). A fine selection from the work of Punch 's chief cartoonist and the illustrator of Alice . "It was [Tenniel's] edition of Aesop's Fables , 1848 that brought him to the attention of Mark Lemon of Punch and he joined the magazine as second cartoonist in 1851, graduating to principal cartoonist in 1864... [His cartoons] represented not only the essence of Victorian Punch , but of Victorian society, imperial, dignified and Olympian. Tenniel's suberb draughtsmanship, meticulous silvery grey pencil strokes made with a special 6H pencil produced some of the household images of the period" (Houfe, Dictionary of British Book Illustrators and Caricaturists , p.476). The album contains finished sketches for many of Tenniel's best known cartoons, including 11 featuring Disraeli. Areas covered include English and Irish politics, Napoleon III, France, Russia and South America. The subjects include: 1. Mr. Punch reading to Disraeli. 2. Mr. Punch congratulating Madam London upon the Hospital Sunday Collection. 3. Mr. Punch introducing Napoleon III. 4. John Bull having his pockets picked by Paraguay and Costa Rica. 5. British and French sailors binding Turkey with Financial Control. etc. 6. Queen Elizabeth addressing Queen Victoria. 7. La France tilting back in her chair, balancing the Cap Republique on her finger. 8. Vested interests: a peer and a publican arm in arm. 9. Madam London's nightmare (Bumbledom seated upon her chest) 10. The Penitent, re. the Merchant Shipping Bill. 11. American slavery. 12. John Bull offered two books lettered "Zululand" and "Afganistan". 13. The parliament railway engine being stopped by Paddy asleep on the line. 14. John Bull throwing the Sugar Bill down a well. 15. Before and after, benefits of life at sea. 16. The Army Bill entering the Lords. 17. The British Lion asleep, being prodded by the pens (spears) of the Press. 18. O'Connell centenary. 19. Father Thames to Madam London. 20. British Lion and Russian Bear having a punch up. 21. British Lion as a bathing machine man. 22. Hibernia's greeting to the Prince and Princess of Wales. 23. British Lion stalking the Russian Bear. 24. Napoleon III, as Blondin, riding a bicycle on a tight-rope across Niagara, revolution below.
