TERRY, Ellen (1847-1928). Photograph album, 1885-1895, containing approximately 190 photographs, annotated in autograph by Ellen Terry together with drawings, prints (including two bookplates by her son Edward Gordon Craig , flower cuttings, transcriptions of poems and songs, and a few inscriptions by others including autograph notes signed by Alfred, Lord TENNYSON (11 April 1892, 'I have ordered my publisher to send the book') and Hallam Tennyson (an invitation), on 56 leaves, 190 x 275mm (some soiling and fading); original olive morocco, stamped with Ellen Terry's signature to upper cover (very worn, detached) Provenance : Florence Terry; and by descent. ELLEN TERRY'S PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM. The photographs are a combination of personal images of friends and family members, and depictions of buildings and landscapes in England, Italy, Germany and the United States. Of the personal photographs, the most remarkable are eight informal images of Sir Henry Irving, some annotated by Ellen Terry as 'Henry having a real holiday!' (showing Irving leaning elegantly against a garden urn), 'Henry Irving unveiling the Marlowe memorial at Canterbury - Wednesday 16 Sep 1899', 'Henry working at ? Coriolanus ?Julius C. Cymbeline!!'; two others show Irving's study and Drawing Room at 15a Grafton Street. There are a number of informal portraits of Ellen Terry as well as five showing her in costume as 'Nance Oldfield', and 'Katherine of Aragon'. Ellen Terry's annotations mostly give names and dates, occasionally with quotations ('The Almighty gave, reclaimed, resumed his own!') or exclamations (on Verona: 'Perfection ... Oh! Verona'). An annotation to a print by Edward Gordon Craig notes that it shows 'Little Nelly Terry ... In my first part'. Ellen Terry's association with Sir Henry Irving began in 1878 with a production of Hamlet ; she played the leading female role in all his productions until 1896.
