The first monograph on the freshwater mollusks of Brazil, part of the record of the expedition of Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius to Brazil, in which he was accompanied by the botanist Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius, and zoologist Johann Baptist von Spix. Financed by King Maximilian I of Bavaria, the expedition covered more than 2,250 kilometers within the Amazon basin between 1817 and 1820. Spix suffered fevers while on the voyage and died before bringing the publication to fruition. His colleagues, including Louis Aggassiz, completed the publication. Nissen ZBI 3954.
