Thano Bula Khan A womanÆs black cotton forehead ornament (davari), with metal thread, faux-pearls and sequins, (In-123). æI noted that the loop was to go through nose rings (these would be of heavy pearls and rubies and had to be lifted to eat food), and that the black thread strip covered the nose to counterbalance, and was then fixed into plaited hair at the back to take the weight of the nose. It seems more likely that the loop is to fit into the plaited hair. The beadwork strip, which looks incongruous, is common. Bought by Krystyna Sulger in Thano Bula Khan, where she came with Sue and me, and given to me. 1993; a purple cotton everyday bodice front (choli), with predominantly orange interlacing and shisha, 64cm long, (In-125). æMade æa long time agoÆ by an old woman called Hurri, bought from her in 1993; and an unfinished orange sateen blouse front, marked out for embroidery in tacking stitches, 74cm long, (In-126). æA few motifs worked but abandoned by old woman because her eyesight couldnÆt cope any more. CouldnÆt understand why I wanted to buy it, but very interesting to see the way the women work. Also made æa long time agoÆ. Bought from the woman who had been making it, 1993.
