Leather-bound album, 10 x 12.5 in., identified in gilt to "Mr. & Mrs. G.S. Bigland," containing approx. 130 CDVs and cabinet card photographs collected by the Bigland Family of England whilst living in in St Louis, Missouri, and Galt, Ontario in the 1860s - 1890s. The collection is comprised of photographs of family and friends of the Bigland family as well as a number of photographs taken by Charles Savage in and around Salt Lake City of various Mormon elders and topographical views, several portraits of American Indians, and photographs of stage stations, surveying camps, etc. Items of special Mormon interest include an uncredited albumen cabinet card of Brigham Young, ca 1876, and a series of CDVs by Salt Lake City photographers Savage & Ottinger, including John Taylor (1808-1887), 3rd President of the LDS; Edward Hunter (1793-1883) 3rd Presiding Bishop; Porter Rockwell (1815/17-1878), "The Destroying Angel of Mormondom," bodyguard of Joseph Smith and member of the Council of Fifty; Heber C. Kimball (1801-1868) and George A. Smith (1817-1875), both members of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles and First Counselors in the First Presidency; George Q. Cannon (1827-1901), member of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles and First Counselor in the First Presidency and territorial delegate to the US Congress; and Daniel H. Wells (1814-1891), Counselor to the Quorum of Twelve Apostles, Second Counselor in the First Presidency, and 3rd Mayor of Salt Lake City. Also, a fine image of dozens of Mormons before their covered wagons, titled "Mormon Train at the South Pass." Fine outdoor views by Savage & Ottinger include a view of Main Street in Salt Lake City; views over the city looking southeast and southwest; three views of the Mormon Tabernacle, two of which show it under construction; Salt Lake City Hall; Brigham Young's mansion; the Deseret News office with a mule train in front "Headed to the end of the R-Road"; the log cabin post office in Cottonwood Springs; a log cabin Overland Station; the Bear River Hotel; a wooden bridge over the Bear River; Pulpit Rock in Echo Canyon; the Twin Peaks of the Wasatch Front; Hot Spring Lake; and "Scene on Henry's Fork," showing a group of white men posed in front of tepees. Also three views by Chamberlain, Denver, CO, of the Garden of the Gods. American Indian portraits include Savage & Ottinger CDVs of Snake & Shoshone leader Washakie; Ute leader Kanosh, posed with "seven of his braves"; and portraits of Snake and Shoshone men and women. Also nine CDVs by Trott, Junction City, KS, of Kiowa, Arapaho, and Kansa Indians; "Wild Rice Gatherers," by Zimmerman, St. Paul, MN; and two Gurnsey cartes of a Colorado Indians, including a shirtless woman.
