Title: The Birds and Beasts of Shakespeare Author: Kinney, A.F. and Alan James Robinson Place: [Easthampton, MA] Publisher: Cheloniidae Press Date: 1990 Description: Illustrated with 52 wood engravings and one etching by Alan James Robinson (Folio) black morocco-backed rust colored chamois with transfer prints of animals, with armorial design on top board, endpapers also with transfer prints, edges uncut, housed in cloth drop back box designed by Daniel Kelm. No. V of 5 artist's proof copies signed and dedicated by the artist, and with a sheet with 2 original signed watercolors bound in at the front. Signed and inscribed by the artist at the colophon, "For Adrian D. Hiikmann [?]." This book uses Shakespeare's original texts addressing the natural history, folklore, and mythology of the birds and beasts in his plays. The text was written by Arthur F. Kinney, Thomas W. Copeland Professor Literary History at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Certainly one of the most ambitious and most beautiful books of the Press, published to mark their tenth anniversary. One of five artist's proofs of this scarce and spectacularly presented volume.
