Brig.), generally very fine or better (3) £250-300 Footnote James Walter ‘enlisted in the Rifle Brigade on 17 August 1886 and for many years was on the Permanent Staff of the 5th Battalion, being Sergeant-Major from 1903 until 1906, when he was promoted Quarter-Master. He finally retired on medical grounds as a Captain in 1918’ (The Rifle Brigade Chronicle, 1936 refers). Having won entitlement to the above described Queen’s South Africa Medal & clasps for service in the 5th Battalion - the Queen’s Own Royal Tower Hamlets Militia - Walter was stationed at Minister in the U.K. throughout the Great War and advanced to Q.M. and Captain in February 1916. He died in October 1951.
