The Collection of Medals to the Medical Services formed by Colonel D.G.B. Riddick The K.B.E. group of nine awarded to Major-General Sir Henry Tidy, Royal Army Medical Corps, Extra Physician to King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II and Consulting Physician to the Army The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, K.B.E. (Military) Knight Commander’s 2nd type set of insignia, neck badge, silver-gilt and enamel; breast star, silver, silver-gilt and enamel, with neck cravat, in Garrard, London case of issue; British War and Victory Medals (Major); War Medal 1939-45; Coronation 1937; U.S.A., Legion of Merit, Commander’s neck badge, gilt metal and enamel (Sir Henry Letheby Tidy), with neck cravat, riband bar and lapel badge, in case of issue; Czechoslovakia, Order of the White Lion, Commander’s neck badge, silver-gilt and enamel, in Karnet & Kysely, Prague case of issue; Netherlands, Order of Orange Nassau, Knight Commander’s set of insignia, neck badge, silver-gilt and enamel; breast star, silver, silver-gilt and enamel, in case of issue; Belgium, Order of the Crown, Commander’s neck badge, silver-gilt and enamel, in Fisch, Brussels case of issue, good very fine and better (11) £1400-1800 Footnote Henry Letheby Tidy was born on 28 October 1877, the only son of Dr. C. M. Tidy. He was educated at Winchester and New College, Oxford and received his medical training at the London Hospital. He gained a B.A. 1900, B.M., B.Ch., M.A. 1905, M.D. (Oxon) 1911 and became a M.R.C.S. 1908, F.R.C.P. 1919 and Honorary LL.D. After postgraduate work at Frieburg and Berlin he was appointed Physician to the Poplar Hospital and the Royal Northern Hospital. He served in the Great War as a Major in the R.A.M.C. Amongst his many appointments he was Extra Physician to both King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II; Consulting Physician to the Royal Military Hospital, Millbank and to St. Thomas’s Hospital; a Major-General in the A.M.S.; Consulting Physician to the Army; Examiner in Medicine for the Universities of Glasgow, Manchester, Belfast and Newcastle; Censor, Royal College of Physicians and President of the Royal Society of Medicine and Association of Physicians. In addition to his other duties during the Second World War he presided over the Interallied Conferences of Medical Officers. Honoured for his work by several countries, he was created a K.B.E. (London Gazette 1 January 1943) and received awards from the U.S.A., Czechoslovakia, Netherlands and Belgium. Sold with forwarding box for the War Medal 1939-45 addressed to ‘Maj. Gen. Sir H. Tidy, 11 Mansfield St., Portland Place, London, W.1’. Also with some copied research.
