On Wednesday 30th June 1937, a specially prepared Empire Star 500 ridden by the great Wal Handley achieved a 100mph lap of the Brooklands circuit on its way to a debut race victory and award of the Gold Star that would give BSA’s new super sports model its evocative name. The Gold Star did not return to BSA’s post-WW2 range until 1949. First displayed at the Earls Court Show in 1948, the B32 Goldie boasted the telescopic front fork first introduced on BSAs larger models for 1946 and came equipped with a new alloy cylinder barrel and ’head. For 1950 a 500cc version – the B34 – was added to the range and this larger Goldie was the first to switch to the new die-cast top-end, with separate rocker box, in 1951. The 350 followed suit in 1952 and the pair continued as the ‘BB’ Gold Stars after the new swinging arm frame was introduced in 1953. Sold new in Jersey via the Colebrookes dealership in August 1953, this example - frame number ‘BB32A 101’ - is the first swinging arm-framed production Gold Star made and was delivered in scrambles pecification. The vendor first acquired the Goldie in 1955 and rode it in competitions on the island until he emigrated at the end of 1956 to New Zealand, being joined later by the BSA, which had been put into touring trim by the Jersey BSA agent prior to despatch. He sold the machine in 1959 and returned to Jersey early in 1960 but kept in touch with its purchaser in New Zealand. The latter, Murray Flintoff, of Abbotsford, Dunedin completely restored the Goldie in 1990, and in 1991 called the vendor to tell him it was for sale. Repurchased by its original owner, the machine was shipped back to Jersey where it has remained ever since. Presented in good condition throughout, this globetrotting Goldie is offered with its original 1953 engine performance certificate, export documentation, assorted paperwork and correspondence, and Jersey registration document.
