[8], 379 + [1] ad; [2], 436; [2], 418; [2], 422; [2], 430 + [2] ad; [2], 408, 32 pp. With 3 copper-engraved frontispiece portraits; 3 folding copper-engraved maps; 11 (of 12) copper-engraved plates, 8 double-page, 3 folding (1 of which has been mounted and places as frontispiece in Vol. VI). (8vo) 7¼x4¼, 19th century diced calf, spines gilt. First Edition in English. First printing in English of Herrera's important account of the early Spanish conquest and settlement of the Americas, somewhat abridged from the original Spanish version. Sabin remarks that "A grand chorus of writers, from Nicholas Antonio down to Thomas W. Field, unite in their testimony as to the fidelity of this Prince of Historians .... Our own Washington Irving, in his Life of Columbus, concludes a judicious criticism thus: 'Herrera has left voluminous proofs of industrious research, extensive information, and great literary talent. His works bear the mark of candour, integrity, and a sincere desire to record the truth'". This is the issue with the preface in Vol. I in six pages, and the headpiece to the preface and to page 1 represents a hill with a flag on top, with a sun in the background; Sig. B is under the ’a’ of ’Seneca’. Palau 114314; Sabin 31557; Wagner, Spanish Southwest 12i. Lot Amendments Condition: Bindings worn, joints cracked, 2 covers detached, lacking most of spine strip of Vol. I & ½" or so from the top of the others; pencil notes to the endpapers, and in a few instances within, bookplates that have had the engraved name of the owner rubbed off; repair to margin of pp. 55-6 in Vol. III, which volumes is also lacking a plate; still very good overall, quite clean internally.
