Title: The Golfer's Manual, Being an Historical and Descriptive Account of the National Game of Scotland; with an Appendix. By A Keen Hand Author: [Farnie, Henry Brougham] Place: St. Andrews Publisher: J. Cook & Son Date: [1870] Description: xii, [2], 96 pp. Frontispiece lithograph portrait of Allan Robertson with his facsimile autograph. 6¼x4, original printed green wrappers backed with red cloth. Third Edition. Farnie was a journalist who was educated at St. Andrews, where he no doubt honed his skills at the game. The first edition, published in 1857, was the first book of prose devoted entirely to the game of golf, and also the first book of instruction - Murdoch 415; Donovan & Murdoch 1142. Owner's inked signature, "J.E. Burton"? dated Oct. 1873, St. Andrews on top front cover. Lot Amendments Condition: Some soiling and light edge wear, a few faint stains including and small circular one on the front cover; front hinge tender, mild foxing; else very good or better and still bright.
