Title: The Historie of Great Britaine Under the Conquests of the Romans, Saxons, Danes and Normans. Their Originals, Manners, Habits, Warres, Coines, and Seales: With the Successions, Lives, Acts, and Issues of the English Monarchs... Author: Speed, John Place: London Publisher: Printed by John Beale, for George Humble Date: 1623 Description: [xx], 1058 pp; 1059-1096, 1096-1001 [i.e. 1101] ff,; 1107-1258, [84] pp. Collated complete against ESTC S121976. (Folio) 34x22.5 cm (13½x9") full old speckled calf, upper and lower covers pannelled in gilt and blind, gilt fleurons at corners, gilt supra libros lettered “T D”, gilt ruled backstrip with six raised bands, stamped with date at foot and with label ruled and lettered in gilt. Second Edition. Second edition revised and enlarged. Speed’s account of Great Britain from the time of the ancient Britons to the reign of Queen Elizabeth was first published in 1612 with the accompanying atlas volume: "The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine." Though revered more for his cartography, this work has been cited by generations of later scholars, particularly useful for its numerous woodcuts of coins and seals, engravings of royal genealogies, as well as lists of the early heads of religious houses, colleges and hospitals. He likely drew on earlier works now lost and was assisted in his research by friends from the original Society of Antiquaries including William Camden, Robert Cotton, and William Smith A complete and sound copy in an early binding. ESTC S121976. STC (2nd ed.), 23046.3. Bookplate of Pacific School of Religion, partially covering an earlier armorial bookplate of William Bentall. Lot Amendments Condition: Moderate wear with some loss of calf at corners and spine ends, joints cracked but holding firm; small library stamps on front free endpaper, title, and dedication; first and last signatures edgeworn; old paper restoration of lower margin of D5 (bordering rule inked in, no words lost); 1”-3” closed tears to three other leaves; old, faded water stain to top margin of 3D1 to 4A1 and to final few pages of index.
