Second Edition. Second edition revised and enlarged. Speed’s account of Great Britain from the time of the ancient Britons to the reign of Queen Elizabeth was first published in 1612 with the accompanying atlas volume: "The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine." Though revered more for his cartography, this work has been cited by generations of later scholars, particularly useful for its numerous woodcuts of coins and seals, engravings of royal genealogies, as well as lists of the early heads of religious houses, colleges and hospitals. He likely drew on earlier works now lost and was assisted in his research by friends from the original Society of Antiquaries including William Camden, Robert Cotton, and William Smith A complete and sound copy in an early binding.
