Two famous photographs of the original Mercury Seven astronauts, comprising: 1) Bill Taub, Portrait of the original Mercury Seven astronauts in test pilot suits, standing by a Convair 106-B aircraft at Langley Air Force Base, 20 January 1961 2) Photomontage of classic individual portraits of the Mercury original Seven with Big Joe mounted on top an Atlas rocket at the launch pad Vintage gelatin silver prints on fibre-based paper, 25.3 x 20.5 cm (10 x 8 in), the former BLACK NUMBERED NASA B-60-785, the latter NUMBERED NASA G-61-201, both with NASA captions on verso (NASA Headquarters and NASA Manned Spacecraft Center), (2) Footnotes: The first photograph, taken by NASA's first senior photographer Bill Taub on the date Alan Shepard was selected to be the first American to be sent into space, shows, from left to right, the Group 1 astronauts: Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, John Glenn, Virgil Grissom, Walter Schirra, Alan Shepard and Deke Slayton. Known as the Original Seven, the first seven NASA astronauts selected from over 500 military applicants for their 'superb physical specimen' with an IQ above 130, and the ability to function well both as part of a team and solo.
