Beschreibung:

Limited facsimile edition—number 87 of 360 copies signed by the artist and stamped by the publisher—of a Haggadah featuring an inspiring contemporary imagery of the ancient Passover story.
The Moriah Haggadah, a modern Hebrew bibliographical treasure, grew out of two biblical wall murals created by renowned artist Avner Moriah for the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York. Its original watercolor illustrations tell the story of the Exodus from Egypt using resplendent colors (blues, oranges, and golds) inspired by the Middle Eastern landscape, as well as images drawing on Egyptian and Assyrian wall paintings and reliefs, the figures reminiscent of the small human and animal figurines of the Early Bronze and Iron Ages (the period of the Israelites’ settlement of the Land of Canaan). The book’s artisanal Hebrew script was executed by famed calligrapher Izzy Pludwinski in a manner gracefully complementing the artwork. The present lot is a limited-edition facsimile of the Haggadah accompanied by a fine Commentary Volume, which includes an introduction composed by Israeli rabbi and educator Shlomo Fox, an English translation of the Haggadah text, and an explanation of Moriah’s paintings.
Physical DescriptionFacsimile Volume: 58 unfoliated folios (11 7/8 x 11 7/8 in.; 300 x 300 mm) printed in archival inks on double-sided, unopened French-fold archival paper, many folios guarded with tissue; more than 90 of the pages illustrated. Thick brown hand-bound leather, minimally worn; title lettered in gilt on upper board above a cutout in the morocco enclosing a watercolor depicting the Temple in Jerusalem emerging from Earth; title lettered in gilt on spine; black silk bookmark; plain paper flyleaves and pastedowns; signed and stamped on front flyleaf.
Commentary Volume: 74 unnumbered pages (11 7/8 x 11 7/8 in.; 300 x 300 mm) on paper; paper binding designed to mimic Facsimile Volume’s.
Facsimile and Commentary Volumes enclosed in a light beige cloth slipcase, slightly stained and threadbare.
