Title: The Noble Game of Billiards, Wherein are exhibited extraordinary and surprising strokes which have excited the admiration of most of the sovereigns of Europe Author: Mingaud, Mounsier [François] Place: London Publisher: John Thurston Date: 1830 Description: Engraved title, 8 pages text, 1 engraved plate and 40 engraved diagram plates, partially hand-colored. Folding aquatint frontispiece and engraved advertisement leaf are rear. (4to) 29.5x19 cm (11½x7½) period half leather and marbled boards, rebacked with brown cloth, original label on front, endpapers renewed. First English Edition. Translated from the 1827 French edition. François Mingaud is credited with the invention of the modern rounded leather cue tip. His renown as an innovator and for the introduction of controlled spin to the game of billiards is universally acknowledged. The English translation was quite popular with a second printing in 1831 and new editions in 1833 and 1836. All editions are now difficult to obtain. Auction records record only a single copy of the present edition appearing at auction in 1961. Lot Amendments Condition: Boards worn at edges; frontispiece with a split along one fold with an old repair on rear, other plates with some light edge wear and soiling; very good.
