Title: The origin of building: or, the plagiarism of the heathens detected. In five books Author: Wood, John, the elder Place: London Publisher: Printed by S. and F. Farley, and sold by J. Leake, et al. Date: 1741 Description: 5 parts in 1, continuously paginated. 4, [4], 5-235 pp.; errata leaf. With 25 engraved plates (numbered 1-36; 11 of them are folding & count as 2 plates in the numeration). (folio) 42.2x26.5 cm. (16¾x10½"), later cloth, page edges untrimmed. First Edition. Rare work, possibly Masonic in influence, attempting to link the orders of architecture to a basis in Solomon's Temple. John Wood (1705-1754) was himself a notable and influential architect, whose fame as an architect of the Palladian school rests not merely upon his designs for particular buildings, but even more upon his success in the composition of streets and groups of houses. This copy lacks the title-page, with the title-page and 1st text page of the first part bound preceding the table of contents for the entire work. Very rare in commerce. Lot Amendments Condition: Spine head lacking top 3"; title-page to part 1 and a few plates with repairs to the margins; very good, in rare untrimmed state. Item number: 229334
