The Pearse Collection - an important and extensive archive of documents and items relating to a family of 17th & 18th century Christians - some of which were well known preachers of the period. The collection comprises of items from several family members, and includes twenty seven (27) handwritten letters - many of them handwritten over several pages - from William Pearse in London to his sisters Elizabeth and Agnis living in Devon, an Ordination Certificate for William dated 1659, a 1666 sermon written by William bound to 86 pages with covers which was written and preached by William just four years after he was 'ejected and silenced' by the Church of St Mary at Dunsford, and whilst still being persecuted. Williams' last sermon is written and recorded by his son (also William (2)) and accompanied by a letter to his three sisters and a sermon as delivered at his funeral. Agnis recorded the 'Sayings Of Old Mr Dobs,' all 152 of them. She also carefully recorded thirty years' of attendance at The Lord's Supper - held every Sunday at noon. Also included is the collection of Innes Pearse (Nephew to Agnis); a list of his 1076 sermons that were delivered across his forty-or-so years of preaching. Innes' four volumes of Common Places and a volume of Dissertations On Philosophy, as well as his diploma from Edinburgh University as well as a host of other period documents. An 18th Century oil on canvas painting of Innes holding one of his books from Edinburgh University c1719 which is also included (. Framed in a gilt frame. Painting measures 90x78cm total size (inc frame). The entire collection was once the study of an unpublished book, written by one David Thomas A large and comprehensive PDF document accompanies the collection with a several-page overview of the entire collection as well as a photographic record of most of the collection.
