The Prayerbook of Heinrich Wil[nowe?] of Rienekischen, Bavaria, illustrated manuscript in German on paper [Germany (Burg Reineck, Bavaria), late sixteenth or turn of seventeenth century] 124 leaves, complete, single column of 14 lines in an angular German bookhand which leans to the right, capitals in abstract penstrokes, rubrics, running titles and contemporary pagination in bright red, titles in pale green ornamental penwork with calligraphic flourishes, occasional penwork birds, flowers or human faces set in titles, at end of texts or at side of initials, each major text opening with a frontispiece of calligraphic coloured penwork set within simple foliage with coloured flowerheads, the whole text opening with a half-page ornamental penwork design of mirrored foliage rising up to a single coloured bud, a heart suspended within the first capital there, nine full-page penwork illustrations (i&ii: SS. Eustace and Conrad, each with a stag with a cross growing between its antlers in detailed woody settings; iii: the Crucifixion set in Golgotha before a town; iv: God the Father in green robes edged with gemstones supporting Christ on the Cross as the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove rises up from below; v&vi: SS. Peter and Mary Magdalene, each seated in leafy bowers with skulls, the latter clasping a crucifix and reading; vii: the imagined arms of the Virgin, as those of a German crowned prince, with the Virgin and Child at their centre, set within a double-headed eagle holding a sceptre and sword in its talons; viii&ix: SS. Anthony and Francis, contemplating the Christ Child or reading in devotion, early ex libris marks dated 1603 and with name “Peter Kihm” on endleaves at back, some spots, small smudges and areas of discolouration, else good and legible condition, 149 by 92mm., solid in brown leather over pasteboards, slight wear at edges of spine, else good This excellent devotional book was produced for Heinrich, ‘hochgraf’ of Rienekischen (modern Reineck), in Bavaria, and with its calligraphic decoration and numerous penwork illustrations it is among the very finest books of its type. It includes readings for the Mass, for communion, prayers to Christ and prayers for Vespers, with directions in the rubrics for the actions of priests and the bishop in various offices. It ends with a Litany of the name of Christ, another of the Virgin and an index. The seat of the dynasty’s authority was the Schloss Reineck, a hill-castle now home to the Verband Christlicher Pfadfinderinnen und Pfadfinder (‘German Christian Guide and Scout Association’).
