BOSWELL, James (1740-1795). The Principal Corrections and Additions to the First Edition of Boswell’s Life of Dr. Johnson. London: Printed for Henry Baldwin for Charles Dilly, 1793.
First edition of the corrections and additions, which appeared simultaneously with the second edition of the Life. This was Boswell’s last publication before his death in 1795. The present copy is from the library of Sir Philip Gell and his wife, the poet Dorothy Milnes. Their son was the renowned antiquarian William Gell (1777-1836). Rothschild 466.
Quarto (278 x 215mm). Contemporary calf (worn, front hinge starting). Provenance: Sir Philip Eyre Gell, 1723-1795, and Dorothy Milnes Gell, 1758-1808 (ownership inscription to front pastedown, Hopton, Jan 2 1793).
