Beschreibung:

The remaining personal effects of Sir Samuel Benfield Steele (Medonet, Canada 1848- London 1919): twenty seven South Africa Constabulary regimental buttons with together with one a epaulet with a North West Mounted Police button and S.A.C brass shoulder badge,(28). The Strathcona Light Cavalry was a Canadian light cavalry unit, in British Imperial service, was sent to South Africa during the Second Boer War, where Steele commanded them with distinction in the role of reconnaissance scouts. Steele, however, apparently disliked what he was ordered to do by the British, which included burning towns, farms and homesteads, killing livestock of the Boer families and moving the populace to concentration camps. After the war, the regiment arrived in London in February 1901. Steele returned to South Africa that same year to command 'B' Division of the South African Constabulary, a position he held until 1906.
