Translated by Thomas C. Russell. xiv, 158 pp. Illustrated with a folding map, facsimiles of original German and English edition title-pages, two portraits (of Langsdorff and Rezanov), and five plates from engravings in the original German edition of 1812. (8vo) original linen-backed blue boards, paper spine label, edges untrimmed. No. 250 of 260 copies. Langsdorff was a naturalist with Kruzenshtern on his voyage around the world. This volume reprints the California-related portion of his work, and includes a reproduction of the first published view of San Francisco, which was issued with the original German edition but not its English translation. Howes L81; Cowan p.382; Hill, 970; Rocq 15908. Although all 260 copies were advertised as signed limited editions, this copy does not bear the printer's signature. Previous owner's initials branded on foot. Another previous owner's name, residence, and date on front free endpaper in addition to two signature chops.
