The Rolling Stones
The Rolling Stones One of only two known US cover proofs of the original art for the Rolling Stones masterpiece Beggar's Banquet . This cover was originally done by LA creative types Tom Wilkes, Michael Vosse and Barry Feinstein (aka "The Corporate Head"), with Mick and Keith, who did the graffiti on the back cover.(The front cover Graffiti was by "The Corporate Head".) It was created in the real-life bathroom of Wilkes' Porsche mechanic in Hollywood. The Stones loved the cover, but Decca in the UK refused to issue it. After months of arguing, the Stones gave in and went with the simple "invitation" cover to avoid missing the best-selling Christmas season. Near the album's release, there were bootleg "proofs," on card stock but this is an absolute vintage original on thin paper (all copies NOT on thin paper are bootlegs.) This came from the collection of Ralph J. Gleason, legendary music critic, author, and co-founder of Rolling Stone Magazine. Sold with it are two letters from the Rolling Stones management office (Allen Klein's office) that mention the aborted album cover and mistakenly maintain that it would be circulated through the fan club--but it never was. There are no other known examples of letters from Klein's office about this cover. 26x13½in.
