(18x24½"). Important map of the northeast of Asia and the northwest of America, with the Bering Strait (here called the Straits of Anian of the Ancient Geographers). Alaska is shown in nebulous form, with legend "Land indicated by the inhabitants of Kamtschatka, which according to some navigators, may be seen from Bering's Isle." The routes of the ships commanded by Captains Bering and Tschirikow are depicted, as are Bering's discoveries in Alaska. Along the California coast, Cape Mendocino and Pt. de los Reyes appear, also "Port St. Francis Drake wrongly named Port St. Francisco"; the Sierra Nevada is named, but running east-west rather than north-south. A River of the West connects, by circuitous routes, with Hudson's Bay. The Russian map on which this was based was issued in St. Petersburg in 1773. Wagner NW Coast 650; Wheat Transmississippi 164.
