Date: 1899 Description: viii, 57, [2] pp. With 27 full-color illustrations by the author, engraved on wood and color-printed by Edmund Evans (16mo) 5x3, original light green cloth, ruled and lettered in dark green. Custom morocco-backed clamshell box. First Edition, first printing. One of only 500 copies printed. The scarce first edition of this highly sought-after children's book. Often considered racially offensive to African Americans, though Sambo was actually an East Indian. The Dumpy Books for Children, series No. 4, with series ad facing title listing Little Black Sambo at the end. Schiller (in Book Collector, Autumn 1974), pp. 381-6; Osborne II, p. 968. Lot Amendments Condition: Some wear and soiling to cloth; gift inscriptions on half title dated 1899, 1901; page edges a bit rough at corners, rear free endpaper with a large piece lacking from lower corner; good.
