(Portrait dampstained and with a wormtrack affecting the image and mounted on a blank, one map browned, some leaves browned, occasional spotting.) Contemporary calf, sides with gilt fillet frame and centred with a gilt arabesque, later paper spine label in manuscript (rebacked preserving part of the original spine, repairs at the extremities, front joint split and upper board nearly detached). Provenance : pencilled shelf-marks on the title. FIRST EDITION OF THIS RARE 16TH-CENTURY COSMOGRAPHY. This first volume relates to Africa and Asia; a second volume was also published, which covers Europe and America. Mortimer notes two issues: one with ã6 blank, and one with a portrait of Thevet printed on the verso of ã6; the present copy has the portrait mounted on the verso of blank ã6. The privilege was held by L'Huilier and Chaudière, and copies were also issued with Chaudière's imprint and device. Adams T-623; Brunet V-814; Mortimer 517.
