Collation: I: a 10 b-v 8 x 6 y 8 (A1 blank, a2r text, book I, y4r tabula, y7v register of folios, y8 blank); II(1): A 10 B-T 8 U 10 (A1 blank, A2r text, first part of book II, U5v colophon, U6r tabula, U9v register of folios, U10 blank); II(2): a 10 b-z 8 aa-ee 8 ff 10 gg 6 (a1 blank, a2r text, second part of book II, ff9v colophon, ff10 blank, gg1r tabula, gg6r register of folios, gg6v blank); III: Aa-Rr 8 Ss 10 (-9, cancelled) Tt 8 Uu 6 (Aa1 blank, Aa2r text, book III, Uu3r tabula, Uu6r register of folios, Uu6v blank). 176; 164; 242; 159 leaves (lower half of final leaf to book II (gg6) lacking, a facsimile of the whole leaf laid in. 62 lines and headline, double column. Type: 4:190G and 180G (headlines and headings); 9:90*G (text), some printed guide-letters. First initial in blue on ochre ground with decoration in purple, red and green, 3/4-border of vine and flowers in colours, 9-line initials opening each book in purple, blue and red with extensions in red penwork and green flourishes, 4-line initials opening tabulae of parts II and III in purple with red penwork and green highlights, 3-5-line initials in red, capital strokes and paragraph marks in red. (Some light stains, light dampstains and very occasional light soiling, a few small tears at extremities, extending into text at II(1) A2.) Contemporary pigskin over thick wooden boards, 5 brass bosses, corner and edge pieces to each cover, 2 brass fore-edge clasps, vellum flyleaves. Provenance : Benedictine monastery of St. Maximin, near Trier, with contemporary inscription on front vellum flyleaf and another on a1r, occasional MS. corrections in a contemporary hand; Trier, Public Library, inscription dated 1804. FIRST COMPLETE EDITION of the Summa theologicae , which Thomas intended to be the sum of all learning. This is a fine copy, significantly larger than that in the British Library, and complete with all blank leaves. The British Library's copy is the only recorded copy in the U.K., and it is imperfect.
