Three-quarter-page-length cutting from a liturgical book on parchment, with a historiated initial, and another ‘KL’ initial from the same [France (probably Paris or the north east), late thirteenth or early fourteenth century] Two cuttings from the vertical border of a leaf: (i) with a large initial ‘V’ in soft pink heightened with white on blue and gold grounds, enclosing a kneeling and bound Christ, stripped to the waist, between two of his torturers, all before a pink tessellated background, foliate extensions up border with angular gold grounds and bezants, the head of another long foliate extension in lower border headed by an orange dragon with a blue spotted body, cut to edges, 193 by 42 mm.; (ii) another with a ‘KL’ initial from a Calendar, in pink heightened with white penwork, on blue and gold grounds, enclosing a biting orange-headed lacertine animal, remnants of three letters of text, 30 by 60 mm.; both laid down on nineteenth- or early twentieth-century card From the same parent manuscript as the previous lot.
