(California - Murphys) Three sheets from a pay ledger of Kimball & Cutting lumber mill in Murphys, California Place Published: Murphys, Cal. Date Published: 1865-1867 Description: Three sheets of blue unlined paper with entries in brown ink. Each measures 28.3x21.7 cm (11x8½"), loose. Fascinating documentation of payments made by one of the leading lumber mills in Murphys, Calaveras County, supplers of timber to miners and water companies for building flumes, rockers, tunnel shoring and other necessary mining infrastructure, as well as houses and other buildings, fences and sidewalks. There are ten or more entries on each side of the three sheets, most apparently to employees, with pay amounts ranging from around $5 to $50, and each worker has signed in acknowledgement of receipt. Five are signed in Chinese, in pencil. There are also larger sums involved, apparently for contract work, such as "Seventeen Hundred & Sixty seven Dollars in full of all demands for balance due for logging to date" paid to J. Thom, C. Curtis, and Horace Shongo(?). The first sheet covers Nov. 21, 1865 to Jan. 24, 1866; the second from Nov. 18, 1865 to March 7, 1866; the third from Feb. 4, 1865 to Nov. 16, Dec. 10, 1867. The incongruity perhaps explained by rectos being used and then versos when the leaves were bound. The third sheet has 5 revenue stamps affixed to the side with the later dates. Condition: The third sheet with more fading, soiling and offset; overall very good. Lots sold without reserve are sold "as is" and are not returnable under any circumstances. The minimum shipping and handling per invoice is $25 for shipments to the US and $50 for shipments sent outside the US Please consider this when determining your bid amounts Item#: 353627 Headline: Pay log for Murphy's Cal lumber mill 1865-7
