Blade maker marked on the reverse ricasso "COLLINS & CO. / HARTFORD / CONN," obverse dated "1861." Retains the felt scabbard washer. Hilt has gilt finished pierced basket guard intertwined with stylized acanthus leaf and cornstalk motifs, one piece pommel and back strap embossed with acanthus leaves. Grip wrapped in shagreen and brass wire. Nickel finished metal scabbard has openwork brass acanthus leaf mountings with two hanger rings. The applied silver presentation plaque is engraved "PRESENTED / TO / CAPT. EDWARD Z. LAWRENCE / CO. A. 61. REGT. N.Y.S. VOLTS. / BY THE MEMBERS OF HIS COMPANY / AT YORKTOWN, VA. MAY 8th 1862." One of the plaque screws and one hanger ring are known contemporary restorations. Capt. Edward Lawrence mustered into service in July of 1861 in New York City. He was promoted to Major in May,1862 and served until discharged in October 1865. He passed away at the age 45 in 1882. As part of the 2nd Corps, Army of the Potomac, the 61st New York battle honors include the campaign around Yorktown, the site of this sword's presentation. Condition: Good to very good. The blade has been gently cleaned and has some minor, scattered pitting and gray age spots; one small nick on the cutting edge. Hilt retains most of the gilt finish.
