Smiley was born in New York, where she eventually studied with Rufino Tamayo and Vaclav Vytlacil Her artwork followed in their traditions of abstract expressionism with a focus on figural and landscape painting. She taught drawing and painting in New York and later in the Boston area. Over her lifetime, Smiley amassed a collection of important modern decorative arts including Tiffany glass, Wegner, and Nakashima furniture, much of which is included in this sale.
