Title: The Gate to Golf Author: Edgar, J. Douglas Place: St. Albans, England Publisher: Edgar & Co. Date: 1920 Description: 61 pp. Illustrated from photographs. 8vo. Gilt-lettered blue cloth, accompanied by Edgar's invented "gate to golf" rubber stand and two block pieces (with metal parts), all housed in the publisher's original pictorial folding box with illustrated cover label showing a golf course in the background as seen through a metal gate titled "The Gate to Golf" and author's name on the gate itself; publisher's three printed red and white paper labels at the edges (opened), each with golf ball die-cut portion on the bottom, original "£1-1-0" price on front label. First British Edition. Rarely seen complete with Edgar’s invented “Gate” device, consisting of two smaller rubber blocks and one larger rubber device (lettered "Patent-Applied-For") with metal hinge, used to help improve a golfer’s swing. Also, the publisher’s cigar-like box containing all “Gate” parts and housing the book as well. Most copies of the book were issued with a reddish cloth binding, this being an uncommon variant blue cloth binding. Edgar, an occasionally brilliant but often erratic player who died mysteriously in 1921 at the age of 35, was the pioneer of the method of hitting the ball he referred to as 'from inside out.' The book is based on this theory, which has slowly become accepted as sound and is, today, common practice. Edgar was the hitting mentor for Tommy Armour - Murdoch 224; Donovan & Murdoch 15780. Lot Amendments Condition: Box slightly broken on front edge (not opening hinge side), a few bumps and small tears around edges (with some glue repairs), two old tape stains, plus other light wear; "Gate" parts fine; faint stains to volume covers; offsetting to free endpapers; book about fine with a very good box. Extremely scarce with the original box and original "Gate" practice samples. Item number: 161917
