Tom Wilmott A little life haunted by the future. Study D., 2020 Tempera on Khadi Paper Signed verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.)My practice is rooted in a materialist love of the substance of paint and the objects resulting from its employment, and an instinctive need to indulge in the act of painting. My paintings may be considered products of necessity and desire, fulfilling a base, fundamental creative need and delighting in raw physicality. I openly employ painting as a means to improve my experience of living. The honest truth is that I need it in order to be happy. In my conscious practice I seek to distil the object and the experience of painting down to something elemental within the field. It is perhaps a quest for some sort of material purity or truth (if such a thing exists). My paintings are deliberate, planned and considered and my aesthetic approach generally reductive. Humble material constructions as they are, they stand on their own merits, living or dying by their visual qualities. In formal terms, I hope they may manifest something of the essential within the grand tradition to which they belong and so I strive to make objects that, in their fabric, embody qualities singular and unique to painting.' Tom Wilmott. Lives and works in London. Graduated from Central Saint Martins, London and Camberwell College of Art, London. Exhibitions include: 'Carry On', Fold Gallery, London (2019), 'C'est de la peinture!', curated by Gareth Kemp, Barkley Gallery, Manchester (2018), 'The Other Art Fair', Victoria House, Holborn, London (2018),'The man who was too nice to die' (solo), Divisible Project Space, Dayton, Ohio, USA (2018), 'An Insect Who Dreamt He Was A Man' (solo), Studio Ninety, London (2017), 'The Waltz'(solo), Darbyshire Ltd, London (2017). Projects include: Co-founder of Wilderness Projects, founder of The Waiting Rooms Gallery (2001 - 2004) and the Flea Pit Gallery, Columbia Road from (2005 - 2007).
