When fellow painter Peter Lanyon died after a gliding accident in 1964, O'Malley painted a powerful work in his memory, visualising the artist as a Windhover, a kestrel, as in the Gerard Manley Hopkins poem, suspended above the dark void of the quarry, fringed by snow in winter. That painting in now in the National Gallery of Ireland collection and this gouache directly echoes it.
