Two engraved folding map frontispieces, 7 plates, one folding. (Very light offsetting to titles, repaired tear to second.) Contemporary mottled calf, spines gilt (some rubbing to spines). Provenance : George Finch (bookplates). FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, published the same year as the French first edition. Denon was a member of the Commission des Sciences et Arts which accompanied Napoleon's Egyptian campaign. Brunet II: 599. MONARDES, Nicholas (1493-1588). Translated by John Frampton (ca 1493-1588). London: [Thomas Dawson for] William Norton, 1580. 4 o (190 x 128 mm). Gothic and roman type, headlines and shoulder-notes in italic, typographic title-border, 9-line historiated and 6-line ornamental woodcut initials, numerous text woodcuts of American plants, trees, stones and fruit, a few full-page. (Lacking * signature, title and dedication supplied in facsimile, sub-title at 2E3 worn and reinforced with loss to a few words, colophon leaf laid down to free endpaper, scattered minor soiling, marginal dampstain or marginal wormholes to a few leaves.) Modern blind-stamped morocco. Second edition in English, the first with the additional treatises on the medical properties of the bezoar stone and viper's grass, iron, and snow. This is the corrected issue with cancels as described in Hunt Monardes "was the first physician to write of the vegetable poison curare, and his lengthy description of an even more famous American plant introduced to Europe the name 'tabaco' and 'nicotain'" (Norman). The Totall Discourse, Of the rare Adventures, and painefull Peregrinations of long nineteene yeares Travailes from Scotland, to the most famous Kingdomes in Europe, Asia, and Africa . London: I. Okes, 1640. 4 o (184 x 137 mm). Woodcut portrait frontispiece (light dampstaining to corner), 8 woodcut illustrations in text, including the portrait of Lithgow in Ottoman dress by the ruins of Troy repeated from the frontispiece. (Some tiny wormholes with inconspicuous repair to first few leaves, occasional light stains, small adhesion to Y2r.) Modern calf. Second edition. This volume is "a book of uncommon value and interest, for its descriptions of men and manners even more than of places. Thus it is probably the earliest authority for coffee-drinking in Europe, Turkish baths, a pigeon post between Aleppo and Baghdad, the long Turkish tobacco-pipes, artificial incubation, and the importation (since about 1550) of currants from Zante to England" (DNB).
