After a brief sojourn, during which he gathered materials, he sailed for home via the Sandwich Islands. Farnham was one of Jason Lee's converts to the proposition that the United States should forcefully assert its claim to the Pacific Northwest, and the book, first published in 1841, became an effective propaganda piece for boosters of American control of Oregon.
