Phillips 1781, third edition. 8vo, 3/4 leather over marbled paper boards, 543pp, [xxiii], two hand-colored folding maps of North America and Carver's travels, three hand-colored plates and one uncolored plate. Carver was born in Weymouth, MA, and later moved to Canterbury, CT. He joined the Massachusetts militia at the beginning of the French and Indian War, 1755. While serving in the army, he learned mapping and surveying techniques. He became captain of a regiment. In 1763, he quit the military to explore the lands acquired by the British in the conflicts with Indians, but had difficulty finding a sponsor. In 1766 his friend, Robert Rogers, contracted him to find a Western route to the Pacific Ocean. Thus much of his exploration was along the Upper Mississippi in Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota. However, when he returned, he was not reimbursed for his efforts, so he went to England to petition the king, and remained there for the rest of his life. Condition: Boards worn with some repair of hinges. Text block tight. Overall very good. Ex lib. with library blind stamps on tp.
