Performed by Order of the Government of the United States, in the Years 1804, 1805, and 1806 Author: Lewis, Meriwether & William Clark Place Published: London Publisher: Longman, Hurst, Reese, Orme, and Brown Date Published: 1815 Description: 3 volumes. xxvi, [2], 411; xii, 434; xii, 394 pp. With 6 copper-engraved maps & charts, 1 of which is folding with red and green marked routes (on heavy-stock paper backing and contained in rear pocket of Volume I). (8vo) 20.8x12.7 cm (8¼x5"), rebound in modern blue morocco-backed cloth-covered boards, spines lettered in gilt, raised bands, all edges trimmed, fresh endpapers. Second English Edition. Second English edition of the official account of the most influential overland expedition in the annals of the exploration of North America, following the one-volume quarto edition of the preceding year. The folding map, "A Map of Lewis and Clark's Track Across the Western Portion of North America, from the Mississippi to the Pacific, by Order of the Executive of the United States in 1804, 5 & 6," seem identical to the map in the 1814 first English edition (Wheat, Transmississippi 317), which was itself a close copy of the map in the American first edition of 1814. Field 930n; Graff 2481; Howes L317; Sabin 40830; Wagner-Camp 13:3. With supplied stipple-engraved portrait of Meriwether Lewis as frontispiece. Condition: A few hints of soiling; light foxing, a few dog-eared leaves, supplied frontispiece repaired (with no loss to image); some splits to folding map repaired in backing, a very good copy professionally restored.
