Provenance : Ivan Turgenev (presentation inscription to:) -- Egor Petrovich Kovalevskii (1809-1868) -- '[?P] 511' (pencilled on the mount). A RARE PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT OF TURGENEV, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR, in Russian: 'To Egor Petrovich Kovalevskii, our honourable Chairman. I. Turgenev. 1866'. Kovalevskii was Chairman and founding member of the literary fund and society for the benefit of needy authors and scholars. He wrote several works of history and travel, notably missions to Khiva and Beijing, and distinguished himself in the defence of Sebastopol.
