TWAIN, MARK (=CLEMENS, SAMUEL LANGHORNE) Autograph letter signed, written from Bermuda to his friend and biographer Albert Bigelow Paine , dated Feb. 21/10 (i.e. 1910). 6 1/4 x 4 7/8 inches (16 x 12 cm); 4 pp. on mourning stationery with his Stormfield address, signed SLC, accompanied by the original envelope. Central crease where folded for posting, overall in fine condition. A rollicking letter from Twain to Paine, written two months before his death, probably a follow-up to a letter posted previously; it is headed P.S., but clearly stands on its own. He begins by urging his friend not to purchase the International Cyclopedia at half-price (apparently he had requested one previously), as he has located it and "If your order has been filled, sell it back to the seller at half half-rates, & if you can't, keep it and give it to the Mark Twain Library." He goes on to note that he is writing this letter at 2:30 in the morning, as he cannot sleep "because a professional pianist is coming tomorrow afternoon to play for me. My God, I wouldn't allow Paderewski nor Gabrilowitsch [who had married Twain's daughter Clara] to do that. I would rather have my leg amputated." The letter continues in this vein. Letters by Twain to Paine are uncommon in commerce, as (for that matter) are Twain letters with a musical theme. C
