Title: Twenty-one volumes of The Strand Magazine, 1891-1901 Author: Place: London Publisher: George Newnes Date: 1891-1901 Description: 21 volumes. Includes vols. I-VII, IX-XXII. 6 issues bound together per volume. Illustrated by Sidney Paget Walter Paget Frank Wiles, Howard Elcock, and others. (8vo) 24x15 cm (10x7¼"), original pictorial cloth, spines gilt-lettered. A near complete run of the Strand from 1891-1901, lacking only the volume containing July-December, 1894. Includes the first appearance in print of Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (published July 1891-June 1892 and December 1892-December 1893), and a portion of The Hound of the Baskervilles. Another Adventure of Sherlock Holmes (published August 1901-April 1902). The relationship between The Strand and Arthur Conan Doyle was phenomenally successful for both parties. Although Sherlock Holmes had already been introduced to the public in “A Study in Scarlet” and “The Sign of Four”, it was not until his appearance in The Strand that he gained both unprecedented popularity and a visual identity (thanks to Sidney Paget who was also the first to portray him with a deerstalker cap). The first story that Doyle submitted to The Strand, “A Scandal in Bohemia” appeared in July, 1891. By December 1891, Doyle himself was profiled as a celebrity. Set sold as is, with present flaws. Lot Amendments Condition: Varying degrees of wear to cloth, with rubbing to spines and extremities, some spines with gilt/lettering rubbed away, occasional tears to cloth; at least 4 volumes with bindings detached from text block, a few others partially so, others with hinges cracked and loose boards; volume 1 with some pages and gatherings detached but present, interiors otherwise generally good; sold as is. Item number: 287335
