"Unfinished Music No. 1: Two Virgins" inscribed and signed on the cover in black against a white background "With love / John Lennon" with a wonderful autograph sketch of the couple by Lennon, followed by Yoko's signature who signs "Yoko Ono Lennon." John and Yoko's avant-garde debut album was recorded in May 1968 and released that November. "Twin Virgins" was the result of one overnight session of musical experimentation. All 12 tracks were made between midnight and morning after which, according to published reports, the couple made love for the first time. The album is famous too for it's cover. The couple used a time delay camera to take the the frontal nude photographs for the cover, and rear view for the back cover. An uproar followed the release, some copies were impounded by authorities under obscenity laws, in other instances it was sold in a blind wrapper. In typical lyrical fashion Lennon commented that the outrage was caused not so much by the nudity, but by the fact the subjects were somewhat unattractive. An important and iconic image (see lot 2304) and an extremely radical job of packaging putting, as it were, the world on notice that while showing us everything, things also were not quite what they seemed.
