the first album has 22 albumen CDV portraits, 11 tintype portraits and 15 gem tintype portraits on CDV mounts, including an anonymous early 1860s CDV autographed by John with green 3 cent internal revenue stamp on reverse, PLUS a wonderful post-war tintype portrait of John in Western outfit with high riding boots, broad brimmed hat and a holstered revolver on his belt, PLUS a gem tintype uniformed portrait of John's son Dr. Gordon Meldrum, PLUS gem tintype portrait of Lincoln, AND an unusual close-up gem tintype of a lady's hands clasped together at her waist. The second album has 35 CDVs including one of Lincoln and another of Grant, both advertising pieces from a photographer Henszey & Co., PLUS composite group portrait of Union Generals and Admirals by C.D. Fredricks & Co., N.Y., PLUS a wonderful photo of a patent model of a horse drawn harvester or hay cutter with imprint of Dunshee Bros., Rochester, N.Y. The other images are both family and friends. JOHN W. ("Jack") MELDRUM (1843 - 1936) was born in Caledonia, New York. He enlisted in the New York 14th HA in 1863 at the age of 20, and saw action in the Battle of the Wilderness. The unit was in the lead in the charge at Petersburg (mine explosion). After the war, he moved West, raising stock with his brother Norman in La Porte, CO for a while before moving to Cheyenne, WY in 1868 with his wife Emmaline. Two years later the Meldrums moved to Laramie where Jack became active in politics, serving as County Commissioner and in the Territorial Assembly. He was also active in the National Guard and served as a disbursing agent for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. He was Acting Governor of the Territory in 1890 when Wyoming was admitted as the 44th state. In 1894 he was appointed Commissioner of Yellowstone National Park, a position he held for 41 years until his death in 1936.
