Includes two insets: view of Olinda in Pernambuco and map of Sao Salvador de Bahia de Todos os Santos. Hand-colored insets and cartouche, map in outline coloring; 18 x 22.25 in. Decorative elements include scenes of cannibalism, scene of native battle, hammocks, sheep, ships, and compass rose. Decorative cartouche is flanked by native American man, woman, and child. Small one inch tape repair at hinge at bottom of map; some small stains above title cartouche. Overall good condition. Blaeu/Hondius. Novus Brasiliae Typus. Hand colored; 23 x 28 in.; opening 15.5 x 20 in. A decorative map with a title cartouche of two natives (genetalia of Brasilian woman inked out); in the interior is an inset of Baya de todos os Sanctos (Salvador), indigenous wild life and cannibal scenes. Originally engraved by Hondius, this is one of the plates purchased by Blaeu in 1629 to augment his own stock. North to the right. French matted. Very good condition.
