Three Civil War cartes trimmed and mounted in sixth plate cases. The first is identified in old pencil as “Sumner Chase” with a later ink notation, “Killed at/Greenbrier WVa/Civil War,” no back mark. This is presumably twenty-three year old Private Sumner F. Chase, Co. A., 2nd West Virginia Cavalry. HDS lists Chase as having enlisted in January 1864. He was KIA on May 10, 1864 at Cove Mountain, (West) Va. (aka Grassy Lick, aka Wytheville, Va.). The second sixth plate contains two CDVs identified as, “John Ernest Bing—Father as a boy in the Civil War.” The bearded fellow standing next to Bing in the second CDV is unknown. Eighteen year old John E. Bing joined Company B., 56th OVI in November 1861. He fought with the regiment for the duration before being mustered out in April 1866. Note the ornate trefoil braiding on the cuffs of the shell jacket in both CDVs. The 56th OVI served primarily with the 13th Corps in the western theatre and engaged in particularly heavy fighting at Champion Hill where the regiment lost over 100 men, followed by the Vicksburg Campaign, and Sabine Crossroads. Condition: All CDV’s trimmed; the Chase image VG, housed in damaged Union Case. Double images of Bing near VG, housed in undamaged brown Union floral pattern case with minor edge wear.
